Mud on ice turned the Fiuggi track into a slippery course and it turned the race into an apocalyptic fight to stay upright. On top of the challenging course, Ellen was suffering from an upset stomach just minutes before the start. She knew however that on this icy track with long narrow sections, being in the front of the race from the start was imperative. Equally crucial was to avoid slidings or crashes as much as possible. Ellen succeeded in the first but crashed up to three times going downhill on the icy sections in the wood. In the first lap nearly all riders slipped or crashed, some even slid into the fencing. Logically victory was claimed by the rider – Marianne Vos – who managed to stay upright on this greasy surface. Ellen came in seventh without major injuries, securing her fourth place in the overal WC ranking.
