After four silver medals in the National Championships, Ellen got a bronze one in Ostend this time. She finished after Sanne Cant and Laura Verdonschot who surprisingly claimed second place and the silver medal. It was a tough course and both the massive bridge, connecting the velodrome with the beach, and the long running sections proved too great a challenge for Ellen. Although she did not make any mistakes during the race, she was already facing a gap between herself and the other two medal contenders after the first sand section. For a while she followed at ten seconds but in the ultimate lap the leading duo was up to forty seconds ahead. She had to settle for third position which was never in any danger.
